The Indians hosted the 1981 All-Star Game at Cleveland Stadium on August 9. The exhibition had been pushed back because of a players’ strike, which forced the cancellation of nearly two months of the season.

Len Barker, the Indians’ ace, had compiled a 5–3 record and 2.08 ERA prior to the All-Star break. He tallied seven complete games (including two shutouts) in his 10 starts. On May 15, Barker threw the eighth perfect game in Major League Baseball’s modern era. He blanked the Blue Jays in a 3–0 win and registered 11 strikeouts.

Given Barker’s early-season success, the Indians believed the right-hander deserved to start for the American League in front of his home crowd. Instead, Detroit’s Jack Morris, who posted a 9–3 record and 2.56 ERA in 13 first-half starts, was tabbed to take the mound first. Morris tossed a pair of scoreless innings, as he limited the National League to two hits and one walk. Barker then took over and retired all six batters he faced. Pete Rose, Dave Concepcion, Dave Parker, Mike Schmidt, George Foster, and Andre Dawson—who combined for 58 career All-Star Game appearances—all made outs against Barker.
